Firefighters, often colloquially called firemen, are rescuers extensively trained primarily to put out dangerous fires that threaten civilian populations and property, to rescue people from vehicle incidents, collapsed and burning buildings and other such situations. The increasing complexity of modern industrialized life with an increase in the scale of hazards has stimulated both advances in firefighting technology and a broadening of the firefighter-rescuer's remit. They sometimes provide emergency medical services. The fire service or fire and rescue service also known in some countries as the fire brigade / fire department, or emergency services.
The goals of fire fighting are (in order) saving lives, saving property, and protecting the environment. As such, the skills required for safe operations are regularly practiced during training evaluations throughout a firefighters career.
Firefighters have some basic skills: self-discipline, courage, mental alertness, endurance strength, mechanical aptitude, self-preservation, good judgement and a sense of public service. Fire fighting is further broken down into skills which include size-up, extinguishing, ventilation, and salvage and overhaul. Search and Rescue, which has already been mentioned, is performed early in any fire scenario and many times is in unison with extinguishing process.April 22, 2010: An oil drilling rig that erupted into a giant fireball in the Gulf of Mexico off the Louisiana coast sank on Thursday as rescuers continued searching for 11 missing workers Transocean Ltd said.
The Coast Guard, which has sent all vessels, helicopters and aircraft in the area to look for the missing, was diverting aircraft to the scene 42 miles southeast of Venice, Louisiana, to confirm the reports, a spokesman said.
The rig was drilling for BP Plc with 126 workers on board when it was ripped by explosion and fire about 10.00 PM Central Daylight Time Tuesday. Some 115 workers escaped, including 17 helicoptered to New Orleans area hospitals with injuries.
The search continued on Thursday for the 11 workers missing since the initial blast. Officials said they have not given up hope of finding the missing workers alive, carried from the scene by ocean currents.
Transocean, based in Zug, Switzerland, is the world's largest offshore drilling contractor. BP, one of the world's largest oil companies, is a leading oil and gas operator in the Gulf.
As the search was ending, oil company crews were trying to clean up the environmental mess created by the Deepwater Horizon, which finally sank Thursday.
The other 115 crew members made it off the platform; several were hurt but only two remained hospitalized Friday. The most seriously injured worker was expected to be released within about 10 days.
The rig was the site of a 2005 fire found to have been caused by human error. An MMS investigation determined that a crane operator on the rig had become distracted while refueling the crane, allowing diesel fuel to overflow. Records show the fire was quickly contained, but caused $60,000 in damage to the crane.

United States (Pennsylvania) - Heavy fog hampered firefighters trying to extinguish a blaze that leveled a sawmill on Route 35, near Mount Pleasant Mills, on Wednesday. The fog made driving here very hazardous, said Richfield Fire Chief Dale Maneval, who added it was difficult to distinguish between smoke from embers and the thick fog. “Ladder trucks couldn't see where they were spraying water, either.”
